There is a great big soap opera going on in the Green Bay Packer world right now. Bret Favre, one of the finest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL, coming off one of his best seasons ever, wants to play for the franchise he has helped make into a football powerhouse and the team management is not wanting him there. Last season, Favre had one of his best seasons, throwing for 4,155 yards and leading the Packers to the NFC Championship Game. The NFL is a “win now” league so why wouldn’t logic say you let him come back and let the unproven QB Aaron Rogers ride the pine for another year?
I believe I know why and I agree with them. All I have to do is look at my favorite team (The Cowboys) and see what happens when you don’t plan for the quarterback of the future. Troy Aikman was one of the finest QB’s of his time and is a Hall of Famer. But once injuries forced him to retire the franchise suffered tremendously for the next 5 years. Season after season of revolving quarterbacks and mostly losing records.
Then there is the Miami Dolphins. In the 9 years after Dan Marino had retired the Dolphins still don’t have their QB of the future and have been a laughing stock of the league for most of those years.
So here you have the Packers who have a young QB they believe can be very good. They have Favre who has thought about quitting for the last several years. He finally decides to retire but still is not sure. Then in March he tells the team he is not coming back. So they decide to move forward, change their offense to match their young QB and start the future without Favre. Then all of the sudden he wants to return. So knowing that they have started this process and knowing Favre may be ready to quit again after this season, they choose to encourage him to stay retired. Who could really blame them? If they go with Bret Favre and Rogers moves on, they could be back to square one next year and end up like the Dolphins are and like the Cowboys were before the Tony Romo era. Then again with Favre they might more likely compete for the NFC championship this year. It seems like they are between a rock and a hard place. The sad thing is I don’t believe it is really the Packers fault. I still think this could end in a trade deal. What do you think?
